Hey Anthony, thanks so much for your thoughts! You're completely right about all of that. I've actually been getting a lot of feedback similar to this, but about corners of econometrics that act more like prediction/data science, so it's good to get some feedback on the other side.

My goal here was more to provide an overview in broad strokes of how econometrics and data science differ, and specifically how they differ in their applications of ML. The problem with broad strokes though is that exceptions tend to get washed out. I may have to do a companion piece about some of those exceptions.
